An essay about a writer who wants to write about utopia, but who realises she can't, because she cannot picture what it would look like, because the world is so dark. This gets the writer thinking about her own generation's inability to envision better worlds. We can easily picture the opposite of utopia – dystopia: apocalypse and societal collapse. But utopian imagination has basically died out. This is sad, because writers used to write about utopias a lot.
